Women’s Basketball Visits Wichita State Sunday

first_imgWICHITA, Kan. – The Drake University women’s basketball team visits Wichita State on Sunday as the Bulldogs close their first Missouri Valley Conference road trip of the season. The contest is set for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on The Valley On ESPN3. In its last game Friday, Drake (9-5, 2-1 MVC) won at Missouri State by a score of 82-75. Junior Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) led the Bulldogs with 19 points, including 11 in the final two quarters, to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) just missed a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds to go with three assists. Freshman Nicole Miller (Walker, Iowa) added 12 points and a pair of assists off the bench. The contest between the top two teams in the MVC’s preseason poll featured six lead changes and six ties. Drake, voted number two by the preseason voters, was able to hold off the favorites, Missouri State, with several big shots to answer several from the Lady Bears. The Bulldogs made their last seven shots in the game to hold on for their first win in Springfield, Mo. since Feb. 8, 2009. Wichita State (3-11, 0-3 MVC) is led in scoring by a pair of newcomers in Rangie Bessard (12.6) and TaQuandra Mike (11.6) while Bessard averages a team-leading 8.0 rebounds a game. Drake is seeking its first win in Wichita, Kan. since Feb. 6, 2009. Following Sunday’s game, Drake returns home to host Indiana State on Friday, Jan. 15 for a 7 p.m. game. Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
