(Feb. 27, 2020)–America’s second leading rider by races won in 2019, Puerto Rican native Luis M. Quinones, a mainstay at racetracks such as Mahoning Valley Racecourse and Thistledown in Ohio, as well as at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia, has been selected by a nationwide vote of his peers as the winner of the prestigious 2020 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, presented annually by Santa Anita since 1950.The Woolf Award, which can be won only once, recognizes those riders whose careers and personal character garner esteem for the individual and the sport of Thoroughbred racing. The Woolf trophy is a replica of the life-sized statue of legendary Hall of Fame jockey George Woolf, which adorns Santa Anita’s Paddock Gardens area.Quinones, 41, outpolled a group of five highly respected finalists that included veteran riders Tyler Baze, Javier Castellano, Chris Emigh and James Graham.“It’s a great honor just to be on the ballot for this award,” said Quinones.  “Winning the Woolf Award is incredible.  I’m looking forward to coming out there and I know this is something I will never forget.”In winning the award, Quinones joins a fraternity that includes some the greatest riders in the history of the sport as he follows last year’s Woolf winner, Scott Stevens.A major force at both Mahoning Valley, near Youngstown and Thistledown, on the outskirts of Cleveland, Quinones had a tremendous year in 2019, as he won 314 races from 1,331 mounts, finishing second nationally to Eclipse Champion Irad Ortiz, Jr., who had 324 winners.A married father of three daughters, Quinones, who has nearly 2,000 career winners, has built a solid reputation that far exceeds his ability to win races according to his longtime agent Billy Johnson.“His personality and work ethic are as good as anybody,” Johnson told Chelsea Hackbarth of the Paulick Report in January.  “…Anybody can work hard, but trainers don’t want to put up with riders who have a bad attitude.  Every horse he rides, Luis tries to find something about the horse that might help it improve for its next start…Even when he loses, he tries to find something positive about the horse.”Quinones will be at Santa Anita to accept the Woof Award in a Winner’s Circle ceremony on Sunday, March 22.last_img read more

ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGNER LEFT DISGUSTED AT ‘DIFFING’ VIDEO INVOLVING NEWLY MARRIED COUPLE

first_imgA Donegal Road Safety Campaigner has been left disgusted after being shown footage of a ‘diffing’ incident involving a newly married couple which occurred at the weekend.Leading Road Safety Campaigner Mary Clinton has condemned the ‘diffing’ incident which occurred at a junction in Gortahork at the weekend which involved a newly married couple. The footage shows a twin-cam performing the dangerous driving procedure around the newly married couple much to the delight of the watching audience.Other cars were used to prevent other road users gaining access into Gortahork to enable the driver to ‘diff’ around the couple as the burning rubber of the tyres blew everywhere. Gardaí have launched an investigation into the incident at the act which took place at the junction just outside Gortahork.Road Safety Campaigner and activist Mary Clinton told Donegal Daily, “As a Road Safety Campaigner and activist of long standing, I would like to express my utter abhorrence and disgust in relation to a video posted on Facebook that was drawn to my attention.“This ‘doughnutting’ or ‘diffing’ activity which was performed as part of a wedding celebration in the middle of the road at a dangerous junction is disgraceful.“Whereby the connecting roads were closed preventing the freeflow of other road users, so as to facilitate the ‘diffing’ manoeuvres of a vehicle circling the newly married bride and groom in their wedding apparel. “I can only describe this sort of conduct as absolute lunacy that has got to be stamped out by the Gardaí, before someone gets injured or even killed.“This sort of careless, reckless and irresponsible behaviour is an insult to all the lives lost to RTC’s everywhere in our county, but especially so in the west of Co. Donegal where many lives have been taken.“Isn’t there any such thing as respect any more?“Forgive me for being old fashioned by thinking that a wedding is a “Sacrament & Holy, Blessed by God”, and not a sporting activity which could endanger life & limb.“I would appeal to all car enthusiasts to desist from this kind of immature and stupid behaviour in the future and hope that no future weddings will be blighted by this ridiculous example. Last year the Donegal International Rally was blighted by the conduct of a rallying enthusiast outside the Letterkenny Courthouse.A video of him ‘diffing’ around a friend on Letterkenny Main Street went viral but was widely condemned nationwide and sparked a large investigation to find the guilty party.ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGNER LEFT DISGUSTED AT ‘DIFFING’ VIDEO INVOLVING NEWLY MARRIED COUPLE was last modified: June 3rd, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:AppalledDiffingDisgustedMary ClintonnewsRSARTCweddinglast_img read more
