Powell to meet with Puma

first_imgAsafa Powell is to meet with Puma executives in Austin, Texas, next month to begin ‘fleshing out’ some of the ideas he has for making his relationship with the sporting goods company mutually beneficial. The 32-year-old former world record holder is two months into his multi-year deal with Puma and said the company has been very receptive to his ideas. “We went to Germany last month and we were just throwing out ideas and they were just absorbing everything,” he said. “It’s like they didn’t know that I would have wanted to do all these things with them, so they were just absorbing everything and wanted to do it. They were interested in everything I lined out and they were excited to work with me.” Based on his experience with Puma so far, the former world record holder, who was once signed to Nike and Li Ning, believes them to be different than other shoe companies. FANTASTIC COMPANY “They are just fantastic people. Other companies are just about business, they don’t have a relationship with the athletes, but this company is a great company. I have been with them for a couple of months and I am very happy with them and very excited about how things are going.” Meanwhile, Powell’s coach and brother, Donovan, is also reaping the benefits of his younger brother’s successful return to the track after the unfortunate events of 2013. Powell began training with his brother while serving a six-month drug suspension after ingesting a tainted supplement. The company that manufactured the supplement agreed to an out-of-court settlement, which exonerated the athlete and his former MVP clubmate, Sherone Simpson. Powell returned to the track and was the third fastest man in the world for 2015, courtesy of his 9.81 run in Paris on July 4. He was also a member of Jamaica’s gold medal sprint relay team at the World Championships in Beijing, China, this past August. That success has seen a number of athletes wanting to join his brother’s Fast Twitch club that is based in Texas. “We are building from scratch and hopefully we can expand. We have a few athletes coming in now that they see what my brother is doing,” said Powell, referring to a number of Jamaican athletes like Natasha Morrison and Kerron Stewart, who joined the club in the off season. Powell revealed that there are many more athletes waiting to join. “I think that is what people wanted to see. They wanted to see if he knew what he was doing, so now the amount of people, trust me, we just have to wait and get everything in order. We are just trying to start from scratch and build an empire.”last_img read more

Apart from this initiative, the children are also assisted in other areas to improve their studies, sports and talents.“This is our annual Youth Expo that we have for the youths where we’ve been having them with different activities. We’re trying to reform the minds of the children and reform the children as a whole from a negative to a positive perspective.”She added, “It’s for about four to five hours just to put the stuff on exhibit so that the general public can see what these kids have been doing over a period of time and maybe bring recognition to them because most of the work was done by them.”Some of the groups that participated in this year’s exhibition hailed from Mocha, Tiger Bay, North Ruimveldt and East Ruimveldt.Cassie Douglas of the Mocha Rising Stars Group related, “We’re displaying handmade items such as earrings, breakfast settings, bags, vases and ornaments.”Meanwhile, Matthew Evans of the Tiger Bay Trendsetters Group explained, “I am showcasing the different varieties of stuff that was made by the children. For example, we have the table mats, mango achar, pepper sauce and plantain chips. All of these items are delicious and we’re just showing a little part of the skills we have.”Over the years, the division has also been working with youths from ages 18 to 28 in life skill training programmes such as cosmetology and, welding and fabrication, photography and machinery operation.last_img read more

Toyota Supra gets four years of Apple CarPlay free but then what

first_img 3 Auto Tech Sports Cars Comments 52 Photos More From Roadshow Toyota Enlarge ImageThe 2020 Supra shares a lot of BMW DNA — some of it is desirable, some of it might not be. Toyota It’s widely known — and the point of some contention — that the new 2020 Toyota Supra has loads of BMW in its genetic makeup. Toyota’s partnership with the German automaker to develop its new Supra alongside BMW’s Z4 Roadster helped make the economies of scale feasible to offer these smaller-volume sports cars. However, that agreement also may have had some unforeseen consequences. Among them? The 2020 Supra looks like it may become the only Toyota to charge owners for ongoing access to Apple CarPlay.Among many other interior bits, the new Supra employs a thinly reskinned version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, and recently, the Bavarians became the first automaker to start charging a yearly subscription fee for Apple CarPlay integration, a move that upset many brand enthusiasts, car shoppers and yes, automotive journalists. By inheriting BMW’s infotainment, Toyota may have unwittingly introduced this pay-as-you-go phone-pairing technology to their own new sports car. 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid review: Sip with subtlety 2019 Rolls-Royce Cullinan review: The top-shelf SUV 2020 Toyota Supra is a divisive devil in red 2020 Toyota Supra review: A solid sports car that’s rife with controversy Tags Toyota Share your voice Back in May, when he drove the 2020 Supra at its US launch, our man Tim Stevens enquired about this issue, and at the time, Toyota officials weren’t sure how they were going to handle it. According to a report from Motor1.com, the solution — for now —  appears to be four years of complementary CarPlay access. However, that may not be the end of the story — it appears that Toyota may not have figured out what happens after that four-year period expires. What comes next? “We haven’t decided yet,” is the answer Motor1 was given by Toyota’s Jarrod Marini, Customer Care Senior Analyst (Connected Technologies).  While most newly developed Toyota models come with free Apple CarPlay integrated into even base infotainment systems, if you want this convenient technology on the Supra, the base $49,990 (plus $930 delivery) model won’t cut it. You’ll have to step up to a Premium ($53,990) or Launch Edition ($55,250) trim in order to get the upgraded Supra Command system featuring an 8.8-inch screen — the base 6.5-inch unit does without the phone-mirroring functionality. 2020 Toyota Supra - interiorEnlarge ImageIf that infotainment system looks a lot like BMW’s iDrive, that’s because it is. Tim Stevens, Roadshow Toyota’s four-year initial free period is at least substantially more generous than BMW, which previously charged a one-time option fee for the technology and now gives a one-year complimentary period followed by an $80 annual subscription fee on some of its models. One other potentially unanticipated consequence of going with BMW’s pay-to-CarPlay subscription model? The Supra’s system may be vulnerable to outages. Back in May, an issue with BMW’s ConnectedDrive telematics services caused Apple CarPlay compatibility to temporarily disappear in select BMW vehicles. According to BMW officials, a server migration issue was to blame for the brief problem. Roadshow has reached out to Toyota for clarification and will update this story if more information becomes available.Like today’s BMW range, the Supra does not offer Android Auto. Toyota has begun introducing Google’s equivalent smartphone-mirroring tech on select 2020 model-year vehicles in the US and Canada, including its 4Runner, Sequoia, Tacoma and Tundra trucks and SUVs.last_img read more

Yemens ballistic missile hits near Makka

first_imgMap of Saudi Arabia locating Mecca. A ballistic missile fired by Yemeni rebels was shot down late Thursday close to Mecca, the Arab military coalition fighting in Yemen said. AFPA ballistic missile fired by Yemeni rebels was shot down late Thursday close to Makka in Saudi Arabia, a month before the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Islam’s holiest site, the Arab military coalition fighting in Yemen said. The missile was intercepted 69 kilometres (43 miles) south of the city in western Saudi Arabia, the coalition said in a statement, calling it “a desperate attempt by Shiite Huthi rebels to disrupt Hajj”, which begins at the end of August.Occasional ballistic missile attacks, as well as more frequent short-range rocket fire over the southern border, have in the past been conducted after coalition air strikes against the rebels in Yemen. It is not the first time rebels have fired in the direction of Makka. In October they launched one of their longest-range strikes against Saudi Arabia, firing a ballistic missile that was brought down near the holy city, an attack condemned by Riyadh’s Gulf allies. But the new attack is thought to pose a threat ahead of Hajj, when some two million faithful from across the world will visit the site. The Huthi rebels and their allies, former members of Yemen’s security forces linked to ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, began retaliatory attacks against the kingdom two years ago.The Saudi-lead coalition intervened in the country in March 2015 to support President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who says the rebels are supported by its regional arch-rival Iran.last_img read more

PostIrma updates from the Florida Keys whats open and still closed

first_imgPost-Irma updates from the Florida Keys, what’s open and still closed Friday, December 1, 2017 Tags: Florida << Previous PostNext Post >> Travelweek Group center_img TORONTO — The resilience of the Florida Keys post-Hurricane Irma can be summed up in one sign, recently spotted on the side of the road: “After every storm comes a rainbow. We are the rainbow.”Ashley Serrate of NewmanPR, which represents The Florida Keys & Key West in North America, recalled spotting the sign while on a recent visit to her “favourite place in the world”. She told media at an industry briefing in Toronto this morning that this sign perfectly embodies the spirit of the Keys, and how despite suffering a major blow, the destination is nearly fully recovered and open to tourists.“We don’t want to sugarcoat it – when Irma made landfall, it was a category 4. Nearly everything on the Atlantic side suffered damage, but most places are already recovered,” she said.Often referred to as ‘America’s Caribbean’, the Florida Keys spans 112 miles and comprises Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, the Lower Keys, and Key West. According to Serrate, 99% of facilities and activities in Key West and Key Largo (the bookends of the Keys) are operating normally, since they were the least affected by the storm. All hotels are open with the exception of two: Parrot Key Resort, and The Inn at Key West, which is temporarily closed for a complete renovation.More news:  War of words between Transat, Group Mach ramps upMuch of Islamorada, which Serrates referred to as the “second cool kid” after Key West, is operational as well, though only 60% of accommodations are open. Most notably, Amara Cay Resort is set to reopen on Dec. 15, while its sister property, Pelican Cove, is set to open on Jan. 12.In Marathon, best known for being a family-friendly destination and home to the Turtle Hospital and the Dolphin Research Centre, is also still in recovery mode. Its biggest hotel – Hawks Cay Resort – is closed for restoration and plans to reopen in summer 2018. According to its website, the resort is waiving all cancellation policies and is processing any deposit refunds.Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys, on the other hand, need more time to get back on their feet as they suffered a direct hit from Irma. Serrate could not confirm when the Lower Keys is expected to be fully operational again, only saying that “everyday it gets better”.More news:  Direct Travel names Smith as Senior VP, Leisure Marketing, North AmericaDespite ongoing recovery efforts, Serrate was steadfast in her message to travellers: “The Keys is open and up and running.” She credits the locals for staying positive and finding alternative ways to accommodate visitors.“The owner of Pines and Palms Resort was so anxious to reopen after the storm that he bought his own backhoe, which he operated himself,” she said, also noting how Snappers Restaurant in Key Largo operated out of a food truck while renovating its main dining room. “All throughout the Keys, you’ll hear stories like these.”Moving forward into 2018, the destination is putting much of its focus on “only-in-the-Keys” experiences, which include the annual Humphrey Bogart Festival, Fantasy Fest, stand up paddleboard yoga, and nighttime kayaking to view Florida lobsters.Canadians, which rank #2 behind Germany among top international markets for the Keys, are encouraged to check out loveflorida.ca for discounts and incentives on flights, car rentals and hotels throughout the state. For more information on travel to the Florida Keys, go to fla-keys.com.
